Sa Wakas: A New Pinoy Rock Musical

I’ve only seen two musical plays in my whole life.* That’s pathetic for someone who claims to love musicals. Well, I’ve seen quite a lot of movie musicals from the classical Hollywood era (Yey, Film 140!) and from the genre’s renaissance in recent years, but seeing one live is totally different and is much more awesome. There are no re-takes, editing, and other post-production shiz involved, just raw talent.

So when Rhea blogged about "Sa Wakas: A New Pinoy Rock Musical" I immediately checked the schedules and persuaded Mary to watch it with me (it didn’t take a lot of convincing hehe).

We bought our tickets even before the show opened so I was a little scared that it would be disastrous. Medyo mahal kasi ang ticket (Php720 including Ticketnet’s service fee), but my fears soon disappeared when I read positive reviews of the play’s premiere.

Because of the torrential downpour and the consequent flooding and traffic last Saturday, we got to PETA an hour late. Buti na lang brownout and the production staff took a long time setting up the genset, we did not miss much.

There are lots of reviews by better critics online so I’m not going to write one anymore. Hehe. Basta, we enjoyed it very much. For those who missed it, talks of a rerun are floating around (ATTN: Rhea!).

Sugarfree’s greatest hits make up 80 percent of the play, those that received massive airplays when released (Hari ng Sablay, Mariposa, Telepono, etc.). The rest are not-so-popular and may be familiar only to diehard fans. Only one song was originally written for the play:

Sa pagkumpas ng 'yong kamay

Ang aking landas, ginagabay
Nag-iisang tiyak sa isang libong duda
Silong sa iyak, at pagluluksa

Kung puso ko ay imamapa

Ikaw ang dulo, gitna't simula
Nahanap din kita (kay tagal kong naghintay)
Nahanap kita

At maligaw man at mawala

Umikot man sa kawalan
Sa bawat kailan, sino't saan
Ikaw lamang ang kasagutan

Bawat kanan at kaliwa

Kanluran man o hilaga
Ang bawat daan ko ay patungo
Pabalik sa 'yo

Kay tagal nang lumulutang
Walang pupuntahan walang dahilan
Parang ulap na walang dalang ulan
Kamang walang kumot at unan

Bihag ako ng pagtataka

May saysay ba ang paglalakbay
Ngunit nahanap din kita
Nahanap kita

At maligaw man at mawala

Umikot man sa kawalan
Sa bawat kailan, sino't saan
Ikaw lamang ang kasagutan

Bawat kanan at kaliwa

Kanluran man o hilaga
Ang bawat daan ko ay patungo
Pabalik sa 'yo

Kay tagal kong naghintay

Kung ang puso ko ay imamapa
Ikaw ang dulo, ang gitna't simula

Kay tagal kong naghintay

Ikaw (ikaw)
Ikaw (ikaw)
